Special work is key to access
People with limited mobility or disabilities are receiving an enhanced quality of life thanks to specialised work by BGC to give them better access to their bathrooms.Hundreds of bathroom suites in homes throughout North Staffordshire are being specially adapted by an expert team of BGC electricians, plasterers and other specialists.
Working for a list of blue chip housing organisations and local authorities, BGC transform the rooms by installing level-access showers, easy access wash basins and toilets and accompanying hand rails to aid mobility. They carry out around four of the bathroom adaptations a week, with each taking around a fortnight for their eight to 10 strong team to complete.
The company has been carrying out the specialist work for around 18 months with work really snowballing in the last six months. BGC now carry out the adaptations for
Stoke-on-Trent City Council´s maintenance and private grants sections as well as Beth Johnson Housing Association and Aspire Housing in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The Project´s Senior Supervisor Andy Hughes said: "The adaptation involves completely removing existing bathrooms and replacing them with level access showers which is level with the floor. We then embellish this with all the appropriate fittings such as hand rails, shower curtains, floor and wall tiling and new light fittings. We currently carry out around 10 adaptations a week and through word of mouth and the quality of our work we are expanding the service all the time."
Dave Bowyer, Senior Technical Officer with Stoke-on-Trent City Council´s Housing Adaptation Team said: "We have a good relationship with BGC and they have worked with us over a long period of time. Their work is up to the high standards we expect and we will continue to work with them as long as these standards are maintained."
